8 Hours Driver Improvement Online Clinic Course

In Virginia, a Driver Improvement Course, often referred to as a driver improvement clinic or a defensive driving course, is a 8-hour program that can be taken to reduce demerit points on your driving record.

It can be completed online and is often required by courts or the DMV. Successfully completing the course can also earn you 5 safe driving points.

Why take a Driver Improvement Course?

Reduce Demerit Points:
The course is designed to help you learn about defensive driving techniques and Virginia traffic laws, which can help you improve your driving record and potentially reduce demerit points.

Potential Insurance Discounts:
Some insurance companies offer reduced rates for drivers who complete a Driver Improvement Course.

Court Order:
You may be required to take a Driver Improvement Course by the court as part of a traffic violation or to have a ticket dismissed.

Voluntary Points:
You can voluntarily take the course to earn 5 safe driving points, which can be applied to your driving record.

Required by DMV:
The DMV may require you to take a Driver Improvement Course if you accumulate too many demerit points or for other reasons.

Online only:
This course will only be offered online.

Complete the Course and Final Test:
Complete the course and the final test, which can be taken online and must be completed through the provider you enrolled with. Students may attempt the final exam no more than one time per day.

Receive a Certificate:
Upon successful completion, you will receive a certificate of completion, which you can use to apply for safe driving points or insurance discounts.

Safe Driving Points:
You may be awarded 5 safe driving points upon completion of the course, which can be applied to your driving record, but this depends on whether the court or DMV requires you to take the course.

The online driver improvement clinic completion will be posted to your driving record within 24 hours of the course’s completion.  Open-book testing is strictly prohibited.  It is your responsibility to determine if your court accepts a computer – based driver improvement course. All Online Courses include a translator widget with 27 available languages which can be used on Windows desktops, laptops, and tablets; Android phones; not iPhones or iPads).

Students can use it to translate all of the course materials, end of session review quizzes, final tests, and corresponding menu pages from English to their native language. The translator tool will be located at the lower right of the browser screen and all student needs to do is click the menu arrow to choose his/her desired language.
